California Governor Newsom Teases ‘Trump Corruption Coin’ as Crypto Satire
California Governor Gavin Newsom has teased the launch of a new memecoin called “Trump Corruption Coin,” aimed at satirizing Donald Trump’s growing involvement in the cryptocurrency industry.
Speaking on the Pivot podcast, Newsom said the coin will form part of his “Campaign for Democracy” initiative, with proceeds supporting redistricting and voter outreach efforts.
“We’re about to put a meme coin out. And you know what, Donald Trump? We’ll see how well your coin does versus our coin,” Newsom said. When asked if it would be named after him, he clarified: “No, it’s Trump Corruption Coin.”
He added that the effort is meant to highlight what he calls the “absurdity” of Trump’s crypto ventures, describing the former president as “one of the great grifters of our time.”
Trump’s Expanding Crypto Empire
Trump has leaned heavily into crypto in recent years, turning it into a core element of his post-presidency branding.
-
In June, Trump disclosed $57.4 million in earnings tied to his stake in World Liberty Financial, holding over 15.75 billion WLFI tokens.
-
His company, Trump Media and Technology Group, reported holding over $2 billion in Bitcoin and other digital assets as of July.
-
According to The New Yorker, Trump has amassed $2.4 billion from crypto ventures since 2022 — nearly 44% of his post-presidency wealth.
The former president has also hosted private dinners with buyers of his Trump-themed tokens and continued promoting his NFT collections.
Newsom’s Parody Campaign
Newsom’s memecoin announcement comes as part of a broader satirical campaign targeting Trump’s branding style.
Gavin Newsom: “We’re about to put a meme coin out.”
Kara Swisher: “Is it going to be gold Gavin Coin?”
Newsom: “No, it’s Trump Corruption Coin… this is one of the great grifters of our time… His family is sent out before these foreign trips doing deals. The crony capitalism… pic.twitter.com/HNknqlm9Gi

On X, he has mimicked Trump’s trademark all-caps posts, writing:
“EXCEPT WHAT IS WRITTEN AND BROADCAST IN THE FAKE NEWS, I NOW HAVE THE HIGHEST POLL NUMBERS I’VE EVER HAD, SOME IN THE 60’S AND EVEN 70’S. THANK YOU. MAKE AMERICA GAVIN AGAIN!!! — GCN” -
He also launched an online store selling parody MAGA-style merchandise, including red hats embroidered with the phrase:
“NEWSOM WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING!”
Outlook
While Newsom insists that Trump Corruption Coin is a parody designed to raise awareness, the move underscores how deeply cryptocurrency has become entangled with American politics and branding warfare.
Trump’s ventures have demonstrated the financial potential of political-crypto projects, while Newsom’s satirical coin highlights the growing debate about whether memecoins are tools for community-building, profiteering, or political theater.
