Winklevoss Twins Invest in Trump Family-Linked Bitcoin Mining Firm

Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, co-founders of cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, have reportedly invested in American Bitcoin, a mining company co-founded by Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and other partners, according to a Thursday report from Bloomberg citing Hut 8 CEO Asher Genoot.

Investment Strengthens Crypto Ties to Trump Family

The amount of the Winklevoss brothers’ investment has not been disclosed. American Bitcoin announced in May its plans to go public through a merger with Gryphon Digital Mining.

This marks the latest link between the Gemini co-founders and the Trump family. Their connections include:

  • A $2 million donation to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign

  • Attendance at inauguration events

  • Participation in a March White House crypto summit

The brothers were also present at the July 18 signing ceremony for the GENIUS Act, legislation aimed at regulating payment stablecoins, where President Trump personally acknowledged their contributions.

Gemini’s Regulatory Wins and IPO Plans

In June, Gemini disclosed it had filed for an initial public offering (IPO) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The filing came just months after the SEC — now chaired by Trump appointee Paul Atkins — dropped its investigation into Gemini’s Earn program in February, which had been accused of offering unregistered securities.

Gemini did not respond to Cointelegraph’s request for comment on the size of the investment at the time of publication.

Allegations of CFTC Influence

The investment follows a Politico report suggesting the Winklevoss twins may have lobbied the White House to reconsider the nomination of Brian Quintenz as chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

The Senate Agriculture Committee was scheduled to vote on Quintenz’s nomination last week, but the decision was postponed at the White House’s request before Congress began its August recess. While the twins had previously expressed support for Quintenz following Trump’s announcement, it remains unclear when the Senate will take up the nomination — likely after lawmakers return from recess.
